BARABOO
Home of the Ringling
Brothers Circus until 1918 and now home to the Circus World Museum,
where you can still see a Big Top Show.
The State of
Wisconsin is a unique state and within it are many curiosities.
If you want woods, you head up north, if you want the Great Lakes
you just head east. The mighty Mississippi River creates the
western border and to the south...if you really want to travel to
a distant land...is the State of Illinois. Tucked and hidden along
the highways and byways are many unique places to see.
Come along with me as we find some of them...places and things
you may never have known existed.
MONTELLO
A small church stands above four waterfalls
( one is 40 feet high) right in the center of town. This site
was once a working quarry, Montello's leading industry for almost
a century. When the quarry ended in 1976 it left Montello with
an enormous hole in the ground. A local realtor, Irving Daggert bought
the property and paid for the constuction.
RIPON
In
this one room school house on March 20, 1854, the Republican
Party was formed.
GOTHAM
In February of 1999 an ice storm damaged a small
conifer grove and when the broken branches were cleared away...left
standing was this felt-tip maker...carved by nature.
SPRING GREEN
The
world's largest Carousel is located at the House on the Rock.
Alex Joran began building this house in the 1940's and
holds his eccentric obession collections. It is built high
on a rock.
MERCER
A 16 foot, one-ton
loon emphasizes Mercer's claim to the Loon Capital.
FORT ATKINSON
Barely
standing but still there is the HAVEN MOTEL. It's on highway
12 about 5 miles south of Fort Atkinson. Of course this place
holds a special interest to our family...mom and dad spent their honeymoon
there.....54 years ago. Can you believe that it was in the book
of "Wisconsin Curiosities"? We couldn't!
